Creating characters that people love

I love diverse, interesting characters in the books I read. From Roarke and Eve in the ‘In Death’ series by JD Robb to the Dark Hunters/Huntresses in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series, characters that are intriguing and complex with vulnerabilities keep the reader glued to their seats or pages in this case may be, eager to see what happens next.

As an author I am forever trying to figure out how to make my characters more lifelike and enjoyable to readers. Sometimes I get it right like I did in Haunting Magic with Rodrick and Jaxon and other times I feel I missed the mark a little bit.  So I try to figure out what I can do to make them more dimensional and to have readers fall in love with.

With each story, I start out with a loose idea on which my characters may be. I add a dash of this, a pinch of that and stir…hoping that they won’t taste too bad. Sometimes I need to add a bit of seasoning as well to make them taste just right. All authors go through the “Did I create memorable characters? Have I got their personalities right?”. I have had books where my characters would scream, I mean so loud it drowns out the radio and family loud, that they are not how I portrayed them. I don’t know about you but having characters scream at you day in and day out has me in a panic. So I delete, rework and hopefully get it right so they can be quiet again…well until the next story that is.

In Sticky Magic, we meet Jenna and Marc, the story that starts the Devon Falls series and the people who live there. I loved creating the people of Devon Falls because the sky is the limit. I have shifters, dream walkers, sex mage and more that live there and I am toying with adding a fallen angel and a demon as well. Each time I crack open a manuscript, I am eager to see where the muse and characters take me because without those beloved people, there is no book.

SO my question to you, dear readers, is: who are some of your favorite characters you have read and loved?

Raine Delight is a pseudonym of a self professed book lover and after one too many TSTL characters, decided to see if she could write something a little better. Well many drafts later, Devon Falls series came to together. It was originally was to be one book but somehow ended up to 4 with a 5th and 6th one being planned for sometime in 2010. I write a paranormal contemporary series for Aspen Mountain and I am also branching out to other genres as I continue to listen to the voices in my head. Check out my book pages to see what is going on with me. My muse is a male nut who likes to leave me to go sip mai tais on the beach and leave me foundering for words; though eventually he takes pity on me and gets my words flowing and characters start settling down.

Personal notes: I live with my own boytoy and two kids. I love Johnny Depp movies and enjoy hiking, reading and watching movies with my family.

Off the top of my head, the romance characters I remember most are the cast from Francis Ray's Grayson family and Grayson Friends series. I've loved every one of the heros and heroines in her books.
