I considered myself to be a real tomboy when I was a kid. I begged my brothers to be included in their games of Army—and not as the nurse. I wanted a gun. Mostly I thought of myself as one of the guys, but there were a few notable exceptions: Johnny—the really cute neighborhood kid who played golf like he’d been born with a club in his hand, while all I could do was swim. Jamie—with his honey brown hair and brown eyes…oh yeah, and the horse he didn’t want but I coveted. Tom—the swim coach I lusted after for an entire summer. I probably would have been better off paying more attention to my breast stroke since my best friend ended up booting me out of my spot on the A relay team. She must have been practicing while I was mooning over TOM… who barely realized I was alive. Then as I got a little older…well I discovered older men…you know, guys with driver’s licenses and cars.
I don’t think any of us ever really forget the first guy…or really any guy…who made our heart beat faster and made us feel that just getting THE LOOK from them would make us…well…happy.
When I originally wrote The Silkie’s Call, my debut novel with The Wild Rose Press, it was that kind of feeling I wanted to get across between the hero and the heroine. That is what they are to each other. A first love that never goes away, it just morphs into something stronger and more mature. Something that will ultimately make them go through hell just to be together.
Cayden Clifton has loved Annabel Barton since they were kids. He was ten and she was seven. Of course, she thought he was a seal, but that didn’t matter. They meet again seven years later as teenagers, but this time their path is about as smooth as Romeo and Juliet. Now seven more years have passed and they have yet another chance, but one that’s booby-trapped with bitterness and tragedy.
I’m rooting for the first love with this one!
