Sexy Summer Fun

When people find out I live in Alaska, they often ask me how I stand the winters. It's a good question. Sure, it's beautiful and if you like snow, you're set for a solid seven months' worth. But what really gets us through the winters (aside from trips to Hawaii) is the anticipation of summer.

Alaska summers are unbelievably, deliriously lovely. Where we live, it stays light until 2 in the morning, then gets light again a couple hours later. It's never too hot, the sunshine is brilliant, the air is fresh ... and the fishing is fabulous. Think fishing isn't sexy?

Wrong. So wrong.

This summer we've had record setting salmon runs and our freezer is already full of halibut, rockfish and sockeye for the winter. Fishermen have been going out early and coming back happy. People are already telling stories about how they stood in the river and felt salmon swarming and pushing against their hip waders. The Summer of 2011 will go down in history as one of the best Alaska fishing seasons in memory.
