Favorite creature of the night?

I'm so glad to be a part of the Halloween celebration! Thanks so much for inviting me.

One of my favorite things about Halloween is seeing all of the great costumes. Demons, witches, vampires, weres, all of the creepy monsters come out for Halloween. It makes me curious...

What is your favorite paranormal creature?

I love vampires, I really do. Many people feel overloaded by the number of vampire novels available, and long for something different, but not me. Give me a good old vamp over other immortals any day of the week. Why do I like vampires so much? Well, I'll tell ya. ;)

1) Vamps like to stay up all night, and won't wake you up first thing in the morning.

2) Fangs and leather is so much sexier than slobber and fur

3) Got to love all of that intensity underneath the calm exterior – especially when that intensity is directed at you

4) Vampires don't think of playing Warcraft as foreplay

5) All of those Buffy and Edward fans can't possibly be wrong.

Do you love vampires as much as I do? Tell me why in the comments section! Meanwhile, hop on over to my website and check out my Immortal Series. The first book, Dark Deception focuses on the vampire Enrique. A Spanish vampire, what's not to like? :)

Dark Deception, Book one of the Immortal Realm Series.

After being plunged into a chaotic and deceitful society, Maria Guerrero finds comfort in the arms Enrique Torres, a man she believes is innocent of her world. She keeps him ignorant of her inner monster, and the blood oath she took to save her brother’s life. Instead she prefers to use their sexual play as an escape from her supernatural world. When her secrets catch up with her, Maria is forced to confess her sins. Will Enrique find it in his heart to forgive her deception? He must, before her vampire master demands that Maria pays him his due. With the help of a disillusioned fey warrior, she convinces Enrique that vampires are real, and danger lurks around every corner.

Enrique can’t allow himself to fall for Maria charms, or he’ll risk revealing secrets of his own — secrets which would not only scare her, but put his mission in jeopardy. He hopes that by forming a physical connection with the young vampire, he’ll lower her defenses and earn her trust, for only she can help him bring peace to the Immortal Realm. As they play out their sexual fantasies, her true identity is uncovered. On impulse Enrique gives her his trust, and her betrayal hurts him to the core. Now he wants revenge… but at what cost? As the Immortal Realm descends into chaos, Enrique and Maria must choose whether to trust each other again, or fall victims to the dark deceptions that rule their world.

Enrique's boots crunched the crushed stones as he made his way along the garden path. When that whelp Frederick showed up in his room two hours ago, he almost threw the young vampire out on his ear. Enrique knew he worked for Carlos. He didn't realize the extent of the vampire's hold on him however, until the lycans had given their report to the Immortal Council a few hours ago.

Frederick was entirely devoted to Carlos and the vampire cause. Enrique had hoped the boy could be lured away for Maria's sake, but according to the report her brother was firm in his beliefs, almost fanatical. Carlos had promised the boy power and prestige if Frederick would only keep Maria loyal. The deeper Maria became immersed in the vampire clan, the greater Frederick's reward. It was clear from the lycan report that Carlos wanted revenge for the sanctions placed on his clan -- starting with Enrique. Maria was in more danger than he thought.

The note Frederick had given him was worrisome. Maria had wanted to meet him out here in the garden under the moon, instead of his chambers. She had made it sound like she wanted a change of scenery during their love making, but Enrique could read between the lines. In the few short months they had been together, Maria had never complained about their location -- why complain now? She was in trouble; Frederick's presence on his doorstep confirmed it. He just hoped he wasn’t walking into a trap.

This charade had to stop. Tonight he'd come clean with her and offer his help. He would bring her before the other clans and they could protect her while he decided what to do about Carlos and the vampire issue.

Of course that would mean he'd have to stop seeing her. The only way to keep her safe would be to break contact with her all together. He would send her to live with the fey or the lycans, who were better equipped to shield her from Carlos' magick.

A hollow hole filled his chest at the thought of leaving her, but her safety was more important. How could he continue to have sex with her if it put her life in danger?

“You came.” Her words washed over him and he instantly became hard with desire. He turned toward the alcove and saw the outline of her body on the bench, her features covered in shadow.

“You knew I would.” He stepped toward her and braced himself for her charms.

The air stilled, but the familiar flicker of magick never came.

He fingered the blood stone on his chest, his senses alert. Something was wrong. Maria always used her charms on him when they were together. He held out his hand. “Come here, my love, let me see you.”

She hesitated. It saddened him that after all the time they spent together she still didn't fully trust him.

“Something is wrong, I can tell. Come here, querida. Tell me what troubles you.”

She sighed and stood. Enrique held his breath as she stepped into the light, then ground his teeth in an effort to keep his need in check. The moonlight cast golden highlights in her dark hair. It shimmered around her shoulders as she moved. Her simple pale green gown clung to her curves and swished around her legs as she approached. He devoured the exposed olive skin of her chest with his eyes, following it down to the round soft breasts which swelled over her low neckline. A deep sorrow filled her dark eyes as she walked. Something flickered and then they shone a bright violet.

Violet? But only the fey have violet eyes...

As soon as it appeared, it was gone. The familiar deep brown looked up at him, reflecting the moonlight in their dark depths. She grasped his hand with delicate fingers and fell into his arms.

“Hold me, please.”

“Shh, darling.” He moved his hand underneath her thick, silky hair to caress her back. The smooth fabric of the gown slid with his fingers and made his cock harden. She shivered in his arms and Enrique swore he would kill Carlos for whatever he did to make her so fragile.

After a moment, he stepped back and cupped her chin with his finger, lifting her head so he could meet his gaze. “What happened, mi corazón?”

He felt her magick tingle over his skin. The stone heated at his chest in response. She was using her charms again. She must have forgotten earlier in her distress. He inwardly sighed. She needed his comfort, so he would play her game for now, but before the night was over he would get Maria to confide in him. He had to, for both their sakes.

He bent forward and captured her mouth, hoping the reassurance he offered could be felt. The plump skin of her lips fanned the flames of his desire and what he intended to be an innocent peck quickly grew into something more raw and needy. She slipped her arms up around his neck and pressed her breasts against him. His cock strained to reach her, thick with his need. He slid his hands around and cupped her ass, pulling her into his throbbing erection. She nibbled his lower lip and emotion washed over him.

“Maria...” Enrique fisted his hands in the fabric of her gown, pulling it up and exposing her legs. He slipped his hand beneath the folds and almost wept when he discovered he touched warm skin. She didn't wear any of the normal undergarments underneath. He devoured her, his tongue invading her mouth as he savored her soft skin. She bent her knee, raising her thigh and rubbing it against his hip. He felt her ankle hook around his leg and urge him closer. His cock strained against the barrier of clothing between them. She slid her hands down his chest, her soft touch taking his breath away.

Magick shimmered in the air around him, crashing him back to reality. He had no idea why she felt she needed her magick. For her safety, they needed to get everything out in the open and they couldn't do that if she kept wasting her energy on her charms.

He held back a groan and pulled away. She staggered. He caught her arms to steady her and willed his passion into submission.

“What?” She stared up at him, confused.

“I think it's about time you tell me what's going on, querida.”

I can see the appeal of vampires, I really can. When I was in high school, I was in a production of Count Dracula, and I grasped for the first time the power of sexual seduction that Dracula had over his victims. It didn't hurt that the guy playing Dracula was as sexy as all get out, and knew how to work that into the subtext of the play!

Werewolves have a strong appeal for me too, and I confess, I have even written a gargoyle story!

I love the premise you have set up here in this excerpt--a fascinating take on the secrets the two main characters are keeping from each other--you've made me very curious about the 'mission' and what it entails...

For me it would be vampires. Although I generally love all paranormal creatures but there is something about vamps. They are alluring, dangerous but have enhanced senses.
