Wintertime is here!
Yes, I’m excited about it. You might think I’m crazy. Most of my friends do—they’re unable to understand that I love the snow and the cold, that I hate the heat and humidity of summer in the Midwest.
The leaves have fallen and the trees are bare, the landscape looks bleak. Sure, there is the cold and rain of late October and November, a necessary evil before the crisp days of December.
We don’t see much of the sun during the Midwestern winter. It’s dark when the alarm sounds in the morning, dark when the work day is done. I don’t mind it.
I don’t mind it because I know that one winter morning I’ll go outside to inches of freshly fallen snow, no tire tracks, no footprints. The sun shines so brightly that it’s nearly blinding. And the air is so fresh and clean, even if breathing in the chill causes my lungs to seize up a bit!
I take the dog for a walk and it’s peaceful, relaxing, quiet. I don’t care that I have to wear a puffy coat, a knit hat, mittens. We cover the neighborhood, my dog and I—me shuffling my boots through the snow and my little punkin prancing, tail high and wiggling happily.
The neighbors who are out shoveling either wave or give me a look saying: “Are you kidding me?”. I don’t mind it because I love this time of the year.
Snow reminds me of my favorite things—skiing, cold fresh air, being wrapped in a blanket on the couch, logs crackling in the fireplace, the smell of smoke.
Then, of course, there’s the holidays. White Christmas with the family, getting stranded at home New Year’s Eve because of a colossal snowfall.
I don’t mind it. I love the winter. And it’s here!
